Challenges & Opportunities

Challenges

The activity is hard to promote in small colleges?

As small colleges may not have enough places and human resources to support this kind of rooftop farming activity, it is quite hard for them to organize the activity on their own. Also, small colleges may not attract enough students to join the activity.

However, they can gather a few colleges together to hold this farming activity. They can share resources together so that more students can join the activity and get benefits. They can also share experiences with each other.

The activity is hard to organize in the United States?

As there are limited rooftop organizations in Michigan (one of the states in the US), it is hard to invite 2-3 organizations to corporate with. However, their government can provide subsidies or, as mentioned above, different colleges can collaborate and create their own Rooftop farm at their schools.

Opportunities

Career Opportunity

It provides new career opportunities for the students. As we can see, Rooftop Farm is developing quite well in these few years in Hong Kong, it provides different positions (manager, farmer, financial director, etc.)

According to the interview with students living in Michigan, they mentioned...

1. They don't have Rooftop farming in their city.

2. Agriculture developed well in California.

Therefore, if they have this kind of activity, they have the knowledge to develop a Rooftop farm by themselves!

--> new career opportunity & new industry in their city!

Achieving Sustainable Development Goals

This can help them in achieving Sustainable Development Goals. As they mentioned, Sustainable development is becoming more and more important in the US. Our activity can enable them to become knowledgable in developing the Rooftop farm. If Rooftop farms can be developed well in their city, it can further achieve the goal of sustainable cities and communities.

--> PROVIDE ACCESS TO SAFE AND INCLUSIVE GREEN AND PUBLIC SPACES

-->QUALITY AND SAFE VEGETABLES
